Short answer

CPV, short for cost per view, is the cost per view of a video ad: how much a company pays, on average, each time someone watches it. On YouTube, an in-stream ad view counts when the person watches 30 seconds, or the whole video if it is shorter, or interacts with the ad, whichever comes first.

Formula

CPV = total campaign cost ÷ number of views

With $1,500 spent and 30,000 views, average CPV is $0.05. Each platform defines what counts as a view, so compare CPV only within the same platform and format.

Hypothetical example

A music school launches an online course with a 45 second YouTube video. It spends $1,500 and gets 30,000 views: a CPV of $0.05.

Looking deeper, it sees that only 8% of people watched to the end, where the offer was. It re edits the video with the offer in the first 10 seconds; CPV stays similar, but clicks to the signup page triple.

When a view counts on YouTube

Google Ads rules by format
Counts as a view when
In-streamThe person watches 30 seconds, or to the end if shorter, or interacts with the ad
In-feedThe person clicks the thumbnail, or the ad autoplays for at least 10 seconds, or to the end if shorter
ShortsThe person watches 10 seconds, or to the end if shorter, or clicks

CPV, CPM and CPC

The right model depends on the goal. If the video must be watched to persuade, CPV aligns cost with what matters. If the goal is to be seen by many people, CPM tends to be more efficient; if it is traffic, CPC.

What to look at beyond CPV

How to lower CPV without losing quality

When paying per view makes sense

Cost per view bidding fits campaigns where the video must be watched to do its job: introducing a new product, explaining a service, telling a brand story. In those cases, paying only when someone watches aligns cost with what the campaign is for.

When the goal is an immediate action, such as a purchase or signup, conversion focused bidding strategies are usually better suited, because they optimize for people likely to act, not just people who watch. And when the goal is simply to be seen by as many people as possible, paying per thousand impressions tends to deliver more reach for the same money.

Frequently asked questions

What is CPV?

The cost per view of a video ad: the average amount paid each time someone watches it.

How do you calculate CPV?

Divide total campaign cost by the number of views. $1,500 with 30,000 views gives a CPV of $0.05.

When does YouTube count a view?

For in-stream ads, when the person watches 30 seconds, or to the end if the video is shorter, or interacts. Other formats have their own rules.

Is a low CPV always good?

No. A low CPV with few people watching to the offer, or no clicks, can cost more than a higher CPV with better results.

What is the difference between CPV and CPM?

With CPV you pay per view; with CPM, per thousand impressions. CPV makes sense when what matters is the video being watched.
