What is paid traffic
Also known as: paid media, paid advertising, paid acquisition
Paid traffic is the visits that reach a website, page or profile through ads: on Google, YouTube, Instagram and Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok and partner sites. The company chooses audience, budget and goal, and pays per click, per thousand impressions, per view or per conversion. It is the fastest way to generate demand, but it stops the day the budget runs out.
A test prep school spends $5,000 a month on Google search ads. At an average cost of $2 per click, it gets 2,500 visits; 5% leave their details, or 125 leads, and 25 enroll.
Each student cost $200 in ads. With $400 monthly tuition and students staying six months on average, the math works comfortably, and the school decides to raise the budget gradually, checking that cost per student holds.
Where to advertise
| Best for | |
|---|---|
| Google Search | Showing up for people already searching for what you sell |
| YouTube and display | Reach, brand recall and remarketing |
| Instagram and Facebook | Creating demand based on interests and behavior |
| B2B sales, targeting by job title, industry and company size | |
| TikTok | Reach with short video, especially with younger audiences |
How the auction works
In Google Ads, every search triggers an auction. The system finds the ads whose keywords match the search, drops those that are not eligible and ranks the rest by Ad Rank, which combines the bid, ad quality, Ad Rank thresholds, the search context and the expected impact of ad assets.
Google sums up the consequence: even if a competitor bids higher, you can still win a higher position, at a lower price, with more relevant keywords and ads. Money alone does not buy the top spot.
Pricing models
| You pay per | When it makes sense | |
|---|---|---|
| CPC | Click | Driving qualified visits to the site |
| CPM | Thousand impressions | Reach and brand recall |
| CPV | Video view | Video campaigns |
| Target CPA | Bids optimized for conversions | When conversions are already tracked |
What drives results
- The offer: a good ad cannot save a weak offer.
- The landing page, which must confirm the ad's promise and make contact easy.
- Conversion tracking, without which smart bidding has nothing to optimize.
- Targeting: the right audience, in the right region, at the right time.
- Creatives, tested and refreshed often.
- Enough budget for the system to learn, concentrated in a few campaigns.
How much to invest
There is no universal minimum. The starting point is how much the business can pay per customer, which comes from margin and customer lifetime value. From there, a test with a controlled budget reveals the real cost per contact and per sale, and spending grows only while that cost stays within the limit.
Frequently asked questions
What is paid traffic?
Visits that reach a website, page or profile through paid ads, on Google, social networks and partner sites.
What is the difference between paid and organic traffic?
Paid traffic comes from ads and stops when the budget ends. Organic traffic comes from search results and free channels, grows more slowly and builds up over time.
How much should I invest in paid traffic?
It depends on how much the business can pay per customer. Test with a controlled budget, measure cost per sale and only scale while it stays viable.
Does the highest bidder always rank first on Google?
No. Ad Rank combines bid, ad quality, search context and other factors. More relevant ads can rank higher while paying less.
What does a paid media manager do?
Plans, builds and optimizes paid campaigns: sets audience, budget and bids, tracks the numbers and adjusts ads and pages to lower the cost per customer.
