What is Google Tag Manager (GTM)
Also known as: GTM, Tag Manager
Google Tag Manager is a tag management system that lets you install and manage measurement and advertising code on a website without changing its code. After adding two code snippets to every page, all tags are configured through the GTM interface, with rules that say when each one should fire.
An online store depended on its developer for every new code snippet: the Meta pixel took two weeks to go live, and the LinkedIn tag a month. Meanwhile, campaigns ran without measuring conversions.
With GTM installed once, the marketing team adds and tests tags from the interface, in preview mode, before publishing. What took weeks now takes an afternoon, without touching the site's code.
Tags, triggers and variables
According to Google, a Tag Manager container can replace all manually coded tags on a site or app, including those from Google Ads, Google Analytics and third parties.
| What it is | |
|---|---|
| Tag | Code that sends data to a tool, such as Google Analytics, Google Ads or an ad platform |
| Trigger | The rule that fires the tag when something happens, such as a page load or a click |
| Variable | A value used to simplify and automate configurations, such as the page URL or an order value |
| Container | The set of tags, triggers and variables installed on a site or app |
What you can do with GTM
- Install the Google tag for Google Analytics and Google Ads conversions.
- Add pixels from other ad platforms.
- Measure button clicks, scrolling, form submissions and chat clicks.
- Connect the cookie banner to consent mode.
- Change or pause a tag without waiting for a new site release.
GTM and the Google tag
The Google tag is a single piece of code that sends data to several Google products. Tag Manager is another layer: it organizes that tag and every other one, from any platform, in one place, with version control and firing rules. Sites with one or two tools can live with the Google tag alone; with several ad platforms, GTM usually pays off.
Good practices
- Always test in preview mode before publishing.
- Name and describe every published version, so you know what changed and can roll back.
- Use a naming convention for tags, triggers and variables.
- Make consent block tags through the triggers and check behavior in the published container, not only in preview.
- Avoid piling up scripts nobody uses; each one weighs on page load.
Be careful with access
Anyone who can publish in GTM can add any script to the site, including one that collects form data. That is why publishing access should stay with a few trusted people, and agencies and vendors should have permissions limited to what they need.
Frequently asked questions
What is Google Tag Manager?
A free Google system for installing and managing measurement and advertising tags on a site or app, without editing code for every change.
What is the difference between a tag, a trigger and a variable?
The tag is the code that sends data; the trigger is the rule for when it fires; the variable is a value used in configurations, such as the URL or an order value.
Does GTM replace Google Analytics?
No. GTM is the tool that installs and organizes the Analytics tag and those of other platforms. Analytics is where the data is analyzed.
Does GTM slow down a site?
The container itself is light, but each added tag loads scripts. Keeping only the necessary tags avoids hurting speed.
Do I need a developer to use GTM?
Usually yes, once, to install the container on the site. After that, most tags can be configured from the interface.
