What is a tracking pixel
Also known as: conversion pixel, conversion tag, Meta Pixel, Google tag
A tracking pixel is a small piece of code installed on a website that records visitor actions, such as viewing a page, adding to cart or submitting a form, and sends those events to an ad or analytics platform. The name comes from an old technique: a tiny image, sometimes a single pixel, loaded to count visits. Each platform has its own, such as the Google tag and the Meta Pixel.
An online store advertised on Instagram optimizing for clicks. Campaigns brought lots of cheap visits and few sales, because the platform did not know who was buying.
With the pixel recording the purchase event and each order's value, the platform starts optimizing for people most likely to buy. Cost per click rises a little, and cost per sale drops, which is the number that matters.
What a pixel is for
- Measuring conversions: how many sales, leads or signups each ad produced.
- Optimizing bids for conversions, not just clicks.
- Building remarketing audiences from site visitors.
- Building lookalike audiences from people who converted.
- Feeding attribution reports.
Events
The most valuable event is the one that represents real money. Optimizing for page views is easy; optimizing for purchases or qualified leads is what changes results.
| When it fires | |
|---|---|
| Page view | Every time a page loads |
| Product view | When a visitor opens a product |
| Add to cart | When an item goes into the cart |
| Lead | When a form is submitted or a chat is opened |
| Purchase | On order confirmation, with the value |
Pixels, the Google tag and Tag Manager
The Google tag is a single tag that, installed across the whole site, sends data to several Google products, such as Google Ads and Google Analytics, without one tag per account. Other platforms' pixels follow the same logic.
With several pixels on one site, Google Tag Manager helps organize everything in one place, with rules for when each one fires.
Consent and privacy
Pixels collect browsing data, which falls under privacy laws such as Brazil's LGPD. Google's consent mode passes the visitor's cookie choice to the tags, which adjust their behavior accordingly. It does not create the notice: the site needs a consent banner.
There are two ways to implement it. In basic mode, Google tags only load after the person interacts with the banner. In advanced mode, they load from the start and, while consent is denied, send only cookieless signals.
When the pixel is not enough
Ad blockers and browser restrictions stop some events from firing, so dashboard conversions come in below reality. That is why platforms offer server side conversion sending and features that supplement the pixel with the company's own hashed data. Either way, it pays to check what the dashboard shows against the sales recorded in the CRM.
Frequently asked questions
What is a tracking pixel?
Code installed on a website that records visitor actions, such as visits, signups and purchases, and sends those events to ad or analytics platforms.
What is the Meta Pixel used for?
To measure conversions from Instagram and Facebook ads, optimize campaigns for people likely to convert and build remarketing and lookalike audiences.
What is the difference between a pixel and a tag?
In practice they are the same kind of thing. Google calls it a tag; Meta and TikTok call it a pixel; LinkedIn calls it the Insight Tag.
Does a pixel need consent?
Pixels collect browsing data covered by privacy laws. The path is a cookie banner plus features such as Google's consent mode, which respects the visitor's choice.
Why does the pixel show fewer sales than I made?
Blockers, browser restrictions and declined cookies stop some events from firing. Server side conversion sending reduces the loss, and the CRM remains the reference.
