Short answer

Conversion rate is the percentage of people who took the desired action out of everyone who had the chance to. On a website, it is the share of visitors who bought, signed up or asked for a quote. On an ad, it is the share of clicks that became a conversion. A 3% rate means 3 conversions for every 100 visits.

Formula

Conversion rate = conversions ÷ visitors (or clicks) × 100

In Google Ads, conversion rate is calculated over ad interactions. On a website, over sessions or visitors. Both are correct, but they cannot be compared with each other.

Hypothetical example

A store had 20,000 visits in a month and made 400 sales. Conversion rate was 400 ÷ 20,000 × 100 = 2%.

If the store moves to 2.5%, with the same 20,000 visits it makes 500 sales: 100 more sales without spending another dollar on ads. That is why improving conversion is often the best-return investment for anyone who already has traffic.

A conversion is the action you choose

There is no single conversion rate. There is a rate for each action: purchase, signup, quote request, chat click, download. A page can have 10% conversion on signups and 0.5% on sales, and both are right.

What matters is choosing the conversion that represents the business goal and always measuring it the same way. Changing the definition midway makes the rate rise or fall with nothing actually changing.

What matters most for conversion rate

Why the average rate misleads

A 2% conversion rate across the whole site can be the average of 6% on search traffic and 0.5% on social traffic. Looking only at the average, you conclude the site converts poorly, when in fact one channel converts well and the other brings visits with no intent.

The right move is to break the rate down by channel, campaign, device and page. That breakdown shows where to act.

Example rate by channel
VisitsSalesRate
Paid search5,0002505%
Organic search6,0001202%
Social media9,000300.33%
Total20,0004002%
Hypothetical numbers, to show how a 2% average hides very different channels.

How to increase conversion rate

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate conversion rate?

Divide the number of conversions by the number of visitors (or clicks, for ads) and multiply by 100. 30 sales from 1,500 visits is a 2% rate.

What is a good conversion rate?

There is no universal number: it varies by industry, price, channel and type of conversion. The most useful benchmark is the site's own history, comparing the same channel over time.

What is the difference between conversion rate and CTR?

CTR measures how many people clicked after seeing the ad. Conversion rate measures how many of those who clicked or visited took the desired action.

Is a conversion always a sale?

No. A conversion is any action chosen as a goal: purchase, signup, quote request, chat contact. Each one has its own rate.

Does a higher conversion rate lower cost per customer?

Yes. With the same traffic spend, more visits become customers, and the cost of each customer drops in the same proportion.
