What is a CTA (call to action)
Also known as: Call to Action
A CTA (call to action) is the element that invites a person to take the next step: a button such as "Get a quote", a link such as "See plans" or a line at the end of an ad. It turns interest into action. A good CTA says exactly what happens when someone clicks.
A solar energy company had a button that said "Submit" at the end of its form. It changed it to "Get my savings estimate", making clear what the person receives.
Same form, same fields. What changed was the expectation: whoever clicks knows they will get something useful, not that they are joining a sales list.
Weak CTAs and strong CTAs
A weak CTA describes the mechanics of the click: submit, click here, learn more. A strong CTA describes what the person gets in return: the estimate, the quote, the access. The difference looks small and changes the decision, because it answers the question visitors ask before clicking: what do I get?
| Weak | Strong | |
|---|---|---|
| Form | Submit | Get my estimate |
| Store | Buy | Buy with free shipping |
| Software | Sign up | Try 14 days, no card |
| Service | Learn more | See prices and timelines |
Where to place the CTA
- At the top, visible without scrolling, for people who arrived already decided.
- After the arguments, for people who needed to read first.
- At the end of the page, for people who read everything.
- Always the same one, repeated. Several calls to different actions on one page split attention.
How to write a good CTA
- Start with a verb and state the result: "Book my assessment", "Download the guide".
- Remove risk up front: "no commitment", "cancel anytime", when it is true.
- Use the first person when it fits: "Send me my proposal" often feels closer than "Request your proposal".
- Make the button look like a button: contrast with the background and a comfortable size for a thumb on mobile.
- Do not promise what will not happen. If the click opens a long form, say so.
CTAs exist beyond the website
Every ad has a CTA, sometimes in a button set by the platform and sometimes in the copy itself. Emails have CTAs, videos have CTAs, posts have CTAs. The rule is the same everywhere: one clear action per piece, phrased so people know what comes next.
Frequently asked questions
What does CTA stand for?
CTA stands for call to action. It is the button, link or sentence that invites a person to take the next step.
What are examples of CTAs?
Get a quote, See plans, Download the guide, Book an assessment, Try it free. The best ones say what the person receives by clicking.
How many CTAs should a page have?
One main action, which can appear several times on the page. The problem is not repeating the CTA, it is offering different actions that compete with each other.
Does button color matter?
Contrast matters: the button has to stand out from the rest of the page. More than the color itself, the button copy and the offer weigh most.
Is a CTA only a button?
No. It can be a link, a line at the end of a text, an instruction in a video or an ad's button.
