Short answer

A lead magnet is a useful resource offered for free in exchange for a visitor's contact details, usually a name and email or phone number. It can be a checklist, spreadsheet, template, calculator, mini course, ebook or assessment. A good lead magnet solves a small, concrete problem for the right audience, and the contact it generates enters a relationship flow until it is ready to buy.

Hypothetical example

An architecture firm offered an ebook called The complete guide to architecture on its site, and almost nobody downloaded it. The title promised everything and solved nothing in particular.

It switched to a 20 item checklist to review before renovating an apartment. It is short, useful right away and attracts exactly the people about to renovate, the clients the firm wants. Downloads rise, and contacts arrive closer to a decision.

Types of lead magnets

Common formats
Works well when
ChecklistThe audience wants a quick step by step so nothing is missed
Spreadsheet or templateThere is a task customers repeat and could save time on
Calculator or simulatorThe main question is how much it costs or returns
Ebook or guideThe topic needs a longer explanation
Email mini courseThe subject splits well into short lessons
AssessmentCustomers want to know where they stand before deciding

What makes a lead magnet work

The form

Ask only for what you will use. Every extra field is one more reason to give up, and data nobody uses is only risk. For a top of funnel magnet, name and email are usually enough; for an assessment close to the sale, asking for company, role and phone makes sense.

Lead magnets and privacy

Data protection laws require a clear purpose for collecting personal data. Brazil's LGPD, for example, requires processing for legitimate, specific, explicit purposes informed to the person. In practice, the form should say how the contact will be used. If the company will send marketing emails after delivery, that must be clear, with an easy way out.

Gmail reinforces the same logic on the technical side: marketing messages sent in volume must support one click unsubscribe and include a visible unsubscribe link.

Frequently asked questions

What is a lead magnet?

A useful resource offered for free in exchange for a visitor's contact details, such as a checklist, spreadsheet, calculator, ebook or mini course.

What are the best types of lead magnets?

The ones that solve a specific, quick problem for the right audience. Checklists, spreadsheets and calculators tend to work well because they deliver value the same day.

What is the difference between a lead magnet and gated content?

Gated content is any content behind a form. A lead magnet is gated content designed specifically to attract the right leads.

What should a lead magnet form ask for?

Only what will be used. For top of funnel magnets, name and email are usually enough; for offers close to the sale, asking for more makes sense.

Can I send marketing emails to people who downloaded a lead magnet?

Yes, as long as that was stated at signup with a clear purpose and people can easily opt out, as privacy laws and Gmail's rules require.
