Short answer

TOFU, MOFU and BOFU stand for top, middle and bottom of the funnel, the three stages the buying journey is usually divided into. At the top, people notice a problem and try to understand it; in the middle, they consider solutions and compare; at the bottom, they choose a provider and buy. Each stage calls for its own kind of content, offer and metric.

Hypothetical example

A language school organizes its content by the three stages. At the top, an article on how long it takes to become fluent. In the middle, a comparison of online and in person classes, with what changes in price and results.

At the bottom, the free trial class page, with plan prices, testimonials and schedules. People reading the top article rarely buy on the spot, but that article is what brings them to the comparison and, weeks later, to the trial class.

What customers need at each stage

Content and metrics by stage

Top (TOFU)To understand the problemArticles, short videos, postsReach, traffic, new contacts
Middle (MOFU)To compare optionsGuides, comparisons, webinars, casesLeads, engagement, qualified leads
Bottom (BOFU)To decide and buyDemos, quotes, free trials, pricingOpportunities, sales, cost per customer

Keywords by stage

Bottom of funnel searches have less volume and much more buying intent. That is why search ads usually start with them, while organic content works all three stages.

Two opposite mistakes

The first is staying at the top: lots of traffic, lots of followers, few sales, because nothing leads people to a decision. The second is staying at the bottom: expensive ads fighting over the same few buying searches, without building the demand that becomes tomorrow's buying search.

A balanced plan connects the stages: each top piece points to a middle one, and each middle piece points to a bottom offer.

The model's limits

The funnel is a useful simplification, not an accurate portrait. Google's research on the messy middle showed that, between trigger and purchase, people switch between exploration and evaluation many times instead of moving down the stages in order.

In practice, the same person may read a top of funnel piece after already requesting a quote. That is why each stage's content needs to be available all the time, not only in a fixed sequence.

Frequently asked questions

What do TOFU, MOFU and BOFU mean?

Top of funnel, middle of funnel and bottom of funnel: the three stages of the buying journey, from understanding the problem to comparing solutions to buying.

What content works at the top of the funnel?

Educational content that helps people understand the problem: articles, short videos and posts that answer what is and how to questions.

What content works at the bottom of the funnel?

Whatever helps people decide: demos, quotes, free trials, pricing, testimonials and customer cases.

Which metrics matter at each stage?

Reach and traffic at the top, leads and engagement in the middle, and opportunities, sales and cost per customer at the bottom.

Does every customer go through the three stages in order?

No. People move back and forth between researching and comparing. The funnel is a useful simplification for planning, not a mandatory order.
