What is social selling
Also known as: social selling on LinkedIn, selling through social media
Social selling is the sales team's use of social networks, mainly LinkedIn, to find potential customers, understand what they need and build relationships before and during the sale. Instead of cold calling, the seller shows up with useful content, shared connections and context about the customer's company. It is relationship building at scale, not message blasting.
A business insurance consultant posts a weekly case on LinkedIn about cargo transport risks. He connects with logistics managers in his region and leaves knowledgeable comments on their posts.
When he sends his first message, the manager already knows his name and work. The conversation starts with a problem the manager mentioned publicly, not with a pitch for the insurer.
The four pillars of SSI
LinkedIn created the Social Selling Index, or SSI, a 0 to 100 metric that indicates how well a seller establishes a professional brand, finds the right prospects, engages with key insights and builds relationships on the network.
| In practice | |
|---|---|
| Professional brand | A complete profile and content that shows expertise |
| Finding the right people | Searching for and connecting with decision makers at target companies |
| Engaging with insights | Sharing and commenting on what matters to customers |
| Building relationships | Keeping in touch with decision makers over time |
What LinkedIn says today
LinkedIn itself says SSI was for years the go to metric for sellers but that, as buyer behavior shifts and sales cycles grow more complex, it no longer accurately reflects the modern sales environment. The company now highlights AI features in Sales Navigator.
On the same page, LinkedIn states that Sales Navigator sellers with at least four connections at a target account are 16% more likely to close a deal with it. It is the platform's own figure, but it points in the right direction: sellers who know more people inside the customer sell more.
How to do it in practice
- Make your profile look like an expert in the customer's problem, not a resume.
- Post regularly about your audience's problems, with real examples.
- Connect with decision makers at companies that fit your ideal customer profile, with a short personal note.
- Leave substantive comments on customers' posts before asking for anything.
- Move the conversation to a meeting when there is a concrete reason.
- Log contacts in the CRM, so relationships do not depend on memory.
What social selling is not
- Sending the sales proposal in the first message.
- Automating mass invitations and messages.
- Copying and pasting the same text to hundreds of people.
- Posting nothing but company promotion.

The Social Selling Index, a 0 to 100 metric LinkedIn created to measure professional brand, finding the right people, engaging with insights and building relationships.

Does social selling work outside B2B?
It works in relationship sales, such as real estate, insurance and professional services. The principle is the same: be useful and known before selling.
What is the difference between social selling and cold prospecting?
In cold prospecting, the first contact is the offer. In social selling, the offer comes after relationships and context built on the network.
