Short answer

B2B, short for business to business, is selling from one company to another; B2C, business to consumer, is selling from a company to the end consumer. The difference goes beyond who buys: in B2B, decisions usually involve several people, the cycle is longer and the value higher; in B2C, decisions are faster and individual, and the customer volume is larger.

Hypothetical example

A coffee roaster sells in two ways. To coffee shops, it is B2B: a monthly contract, a tasting visit, samples, payment terms and a buyer who has to convince a partner.

In the online store, it is B2C: someone sees an Instagram video, reads the reviews, grabs free shipping and buys in minutes. Same product, two completely different marketing approaches.

A legal nuance

Consumer law does not always follow the B2B and B2C labels. Brazil's Consumer Defense Code, for example, defines a consumer as any natural or legal person who acquires or uses a product or service as the final recipient. So a company can also be a consumer when it buys for its own use, not to resell or to use in production.

For marketing, this means B2B offers and ads are not automatically outside consumer protection rules. How the law applies to each case is a question for legal counsel.

B2B2C, D2C and the mixes

Not everything fits two boxes. In B2B2C, a company sells to another company, but the product reaches the end consumer, such as insurance sold bundled with a credit card. In D2C, direct to consumer, the manufacturing brand sells straight to consumers, bypassing retail. Many companies do B2B and B2C at the same time, and the mistake is using the same marketing for both.

Frequently asked questions

What is B2B?

Business to business: selling from one company to another, such as a software vendor selling to a manufacturer.

What is B2C?

Business to consumer: selling from a company to the end consumer, such as an online store selling clothes to a person.

What is the main difference between B2B and B2C?

In B2B, several people decide and the cycle is longer; in B2C, decisions are faster and individual. That changes channels, content and how results are measured.

What is D2C?

Direct to consumer: when the manufacturing brand sells straight to end consumers, without retail intermediaries.

Can a business be treated as a consumer?

Under some laws, yes. Brazil's Consumer Defense Code, for instance, treats any natural or legal person buying as the final recipient as a consumer. Each case needs legal analysis.
