What is organic traffic
Also known as: organic search traffic, unpaid traffic, free traffic
Organic traffic is the visits that reach a website without paid ads. In its most common sense, it means visits from search engines' organic results; in Google Analytics, the Organic Search channel even includes clicks from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. It has no cost per click, but it takes work: content, technical foundations and time.
A veterinary clinic spends a year publishing guides on the questions it hears most at the front desk: vaccines by age, what to do in case of poisoning, when to spay or neuter.
The guides start drawing thousands of visits a month from Google, and some of them turn into messages to the clinic. Unlike ads, these visits do not stop when the clinic stops spending, and each new guide adds to the ones already there.
How Google Analytics splits channels
| Where the visit comes from | |
|---|---|
| Organic Search | Non ad links in search results, including Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| Organic Social | Non ad links on social networks |
| Organic Video | Non ad links on video sites such as YouTube |
| Referral | Links on other sites, such as blogs and news sites |
| Direct | A typed address or saved link |
| Paid Search and Paid Social | Ads on search engines and social networks, meaning paid traffic |
Why organic is worth it
Organic traffic accumulates: a well ranked page keeps bringing visits months after it is published, with no cost per click. And people arriving from search are looking for exactly that, which tends to mean more interested visitors.
The trade offs are time and lack of guarantees. Google does not accept payment to rank higher and does not guarantee it will index or serve any page, so organic is built, not bought.
How to grow it
- Secure the technical foundation: indexable, fast, stable pages.
- Produce content by search intent, answering what the audience asks.
- Connect pages with internal links.
- Earn links from other sites with content worth citing.
- Keep your Google Business Profile complete for local searches.
- Use structured data where Google shows rich results.
How to measure it properly
Search Console shows the search side: which queries the site appears for, impressions, clicks, CTR and average position. Google Analytics shows what happens after the click: pages viewed, engagement and conversions.
Traffic from Search's AI features is included in Search Console's overall search traffic, and Google points to the generative AI performance report to see how content performs in those features.
Organic and paid together
The two do not compete. Paid brings fast results and helps reveal which searches sell; organic turns those findings into visits that do not depend on budget. Companies that only run paid are hostage to click costs; those that only do organic wait longer than they need to.
