Short answer

Go-to-market, or GTM, is the plan for how a product or service reaches customers: who to sell to, with what value proposition, through which channels, at what price and with what marketing and sales structure. It is used to launch a product, enter a new market or change audiences. Not to be confused with Google Tag Manager, which shares the acronym.

Hypothetical example

A clinic management software company decides to launch a version for veterinary clinics. Instead of just swapping the site's photos, it builds a plan: ideal customer profile, a proposition specific to the sector, pricing, channels and goals.

The plan calls for selling first through referrals from partner vets and Google search, with a free trial period. In three months, the company knows the real cost of each customer in that market and whether it is worth investing more.

Frequently asked questions

What is go-to-market?

The plan for how a product reaches customers: audience, value proposition, pricing, channels, sales model and goals.

When should I build a go-to-market plan?

When launching a product, entering a new market or region, or changing audience or sales model.

What is the difference between go-to-market and a marketing plan?

A marketing plan covers communication and demand generation. Go-to-market is broader: it includes pricing, sales model, distribution channels and commercial goals.

Is GTM the same as Google Tag Manager?

No. The acronym is the same, but go-to-market is a market entry strategy, and Google Tag Manager is a tag management tool.

What role does the ideal customer profile play in go-to-market?

It is the starting point. Without knowing who to sell to first, channels, pricing and messaging stay generic.
