B2B and B2C: what they mean
Also known as: business to business, business to consumer, B2B2C, D2C
B2B, short for business to business, is selling from one company to another; B2C, business to consumer, is selling from a company to the end consumer. The difference goes beyond who buys: in B2B, decisions usually involve several people, the cycle is longer and the value higher; in B2C, decisions are faster and individual, and the customer volume is larger.
A coffee roaster sells in two ways. To coffee shops, it is B2B: a monthly contract, a tasting visit, samples, payment terms and a buyer who has to convince a partner.
In the online store, it is B2C: someone sees an Instagram video, reads the reviews, grabs free shipping and buys in minutes. Same product, two completely different marketing approaches.
What changes between them
| B2B | B2C | |
|---|---|---|
| Who decides | Several people, with different roles | One person or a household |
| Sales cycle | Weeks or months | Minutes or days |
| Ticket | Larger, often recurring | Smaller, with more volume |
| Channels | LinkedIn, search, prospecting, events | Social media, search, marketplaces, ecommerce |
| Content | Technical, cases, return on investment | Benefit, desire, social proof |
| Relationship | Contracts and long relationships | Purchase by purchase, focused on repeat buying |
A legal nuance
Consumer law does not always follow the B2B and B2C labels. Brazil's Consumer Defense Code, for example, defines a consumer as any natural or legal person who acquires or uses a product or service as the final recipient. So a company can also be a consumer when it buys for its own use, not to resell or to use in production.
For marketing, this means B2B offers and ads are not automatically outside consumer protection rules. How the law applies to each case is a question for legal counsel.
B2B marketing
- An ideal customer profile and a list of priority accounts.
- Technical content and case studies for each person involved in the decision.
- LinkedIn, search and outbound prospecting as core channels.
- A CRM to follow long cycles with many conversations.
- Measurement by acquisition cost and contract value.
B2C marketing
- Brand, emotion and social proof weigh more.
- Social media, influencers and search as core channels.
- A fast checkout page with clear shipping, delivery time and price.
- Public reviews and easy returns.
- Repeat purchases and average order value as growth levers.
B2B2C, D2C and the mixes
Not everything fits two boxes. In B2B2C, a company sells to another company, but the product reaches the end consumer, such as insurance sold bundled with a credit card. In D2C, direct to consumer, the manufacturing brand sells straight to consumers, bypassing retail. Many companies do B2B and B2C at the same time, and the mistake is using the same marketing for both.
Frequently asked questions
What is B2B?
Business to business: selling from one company to another, such as a software vendor selling to a manufacturer.
What is B2C?
Business to consumer: selling from a company to the end consumer, such as an online store selling clothes to a person.
What is the main difference between B2B and B2C?
In B2B, several people decide and the cycle is longer; in B2C, decisions are faster and individual. That changes channels, content and how results are measured.
What is D2C?
Direct to consumer: when the manufacturing brand sells straight to end consumers, without retail intermediaries.
Can a business be treated as a consumer?
Under some laws, yes. Brazil's Consumer Defense Code, for instance, treats any natural or legal person buying as the final recipient as a consumer. Each case needs legal analysis.
