Short answer

Audience targeting is choosing who your ads will be shown to. Instead of talking to everyone, a company defines audience segments by interests, purchase intent, demographics, life events or relationship with the brand, such as people who visited the website. In Google Ads, these groups are called audience segments and can be used to restrict who sees an ad or just to observe performance.

Hypothetical example

A real estate agency advertises two bedroom apartments for sale. An open campaign reaches many people with no intention to buy: students, people looking to rent, the curious.

With segments of people researching homes to buy and people going through life changes such as recently getting married, plus the list of site visitors, the ad reaches fewer people, and the right ones. Cost per booked viewing drops.

Google Ads segment types

Audience segments
Reaches people
AffinityBy what they are passionate about, their habits and interests
CustomDefined by keywords, URLs and apps you provide
Detailed demographicsBy long term life facts
Life eventsWhen they are going through important life milestones
In-marketBy their recent purchase intent
Your dataWho already interacted with your business: site or app visitors and customers on your list
LookalikeWith characteristics similar to a seed list; only in Demand Gen campaigns

Targeting or observation

A segment can be used in two ways. As targeting, the ad only shows to people in the segment, which narrows reach. As observation, the ad shows to the campaign's normal audience, and the segment is used to compare performance and adjust bids or creatives later.

With automated bidding increasingly common, many advertisers use segments as a signal to the system rather than a fence, letting the algorithm find who converts.

Frequently asked questions

What is audience targeting?

Choosing who your ads will be shown to, based on interests, purchase intent, demographics, life events or relationship with the company.

What audience segment types does Google Ads offer?

Affinity, custom, detailed demographics, life events, in-market, your data and lookalike, the last only in Demand Gen campaigns.

What is the difference between targeting and observation?

Targeting shows the ad only to the segment. Observation keeps the campaign's reach and uses the segment to compare performance and adjust.

Is very narrow targeting bad?

It can be. An audience that is too small limits automated bidding's learning and makes each result more expensive. Balance comes from testing.

What is the difference between targeting and a target audience?

The target audience is who the company wants to reach. Targeting is the ad platform setting that tries to get the ad in front of that audience.
